Thank You Everyone From Everywhere

A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone involved in this project.  We want to give a special thank you to all of our new friends that we have met from all over the world.  There was so much information shared with us in the last 24 hours.  We are extremely grateful for your time and willingness to join us on all the calls.  This was an adventure that one will not soon forget.  We are already looking forward to next year's tour, but we need to get some sleep first.  Thank You!!!!!!!

Map of Where We Went

Last Call

This is a picture of our last call.  We made a 4 way call connecting our 3 schools to our superintendent.  We took turns discussing with him how our event went.  The students were excited to talk about all the people that they met and places things that they saw.  At this point everyone was very excited but also very tired.  The last call was a success!

Australia

Sydney, Australia 8:00 pm

The people we talked to were a class of students in Australia.  Australia celebrates Halloween, Australian Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day.  On Australian Day, January 26, people dress up, have BBQ s and go to the beach like we do for the Forth of July.  On Christmas, they celebrate Jesus's birthday and give gifts just like we do.  However, in December, it is summer in Australia, so there is no white Christmas.  In Australia they celebrate Valentines Day.

In Australia they do know how to dab. In Australia, one of their biggest holidays probably there biggest holiday. In Australia it is Friday at one in the afternoon for them and and for us Thursday at eight at night. They have just hit Fall, but they just call it Autumn. They start school in January, near the end of their Summer.  They go to school Monday through Friday, just like us. Their school day is about six hours long.  The name of the school we talked to was Inaburra.  It is very hot during the Summer.  They use C, and they just had a week with forty degrees C.  In Australia, they eat lots of fish, meat and lam.  They wear school uniforms everyday, except for special Thursdays where they can wear what ever they want. They play sports similar to us, including soccer, basketball, and football.  They also play cricket.  The AFL is the Australian Football League.  As well as sports, they go to the beach a lot.

Answer: Yes

Question:  Are you in the WW2 museum of Louisianan
Answer: Yes

They have five buildings open to the public. The D DAY invasion and the boats are represented in that museum, the boat has ladders so soldiers can climb to the beach.  The museums first name was the D DAY,  but was renamed the museum the National WW2 Museum.  They have about two hundred and fifty artifacts.  One of these include the C-47 plane which they bought off of Ebay.  They also have a trailer that was used to carry a pigeon coop.  These pigeons were used to carry messages from coop to coop.  They could fly over the battle fields. All of the vehicles still work. The B-17 crashed and the propellers where stuck in the ice, so they had to cut off the propellers to get a distress signal. Some planes came put together with all their parts, but some you had to go find some of the parts.

Polar Ice Cap

 Polar Ice Cap 11:00am

J.B. started out by showing us how his view form his window was, snow everywhere!! He told us how cold cold it is there. Hes sharing stories about how he feel into cold ice water, thankfully he didn't get hypothermia just a very very cold foot that broke the ice. he told us how the most amazing thing that happened to him in the Polar ice cap was seeing the northern lights. The average temperature is about 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The highest temperature he has experienced was 67 degrees Fahrenheit and the coldest has been -37 degrees Fahrenheit.

He hasn't seen many animals because of the cold but when he has its been very close. One time he almost got stranded in cold weather because he got dropped off on an island and couldn't find his job site. His job is basically collecting glacier samples to help prevent global warming!

Yellowstone National Park

Yellow Stone National Park 10:00am

A park ranger, Mike, is coming form Yellow Stone National Park to answer some question that we have. he telling us that over 3,000 years ago native Americans  lived on this land. Many explorers have came through the land but not until the 1872 that it was named a national park.

1995 started the lack of rain, which conflicted with many animals and plants. The plants had a decrease, so that meant elk, beavers and rodents were decreasing in population. one of his most dangerous experiences was coming almost in contact with a grizzle bear! They have about 300  geyser, and two of the biggest ones are Old Faithful, and Steamboat geyser.  He was explaining how only male deer and moose have antlers, and the female do not have any. Bears are now trying to come out of hibernation to try to find food, and introducing their cubs to the new world!

Yellow Stone was the very first national parks, it was a park before all the four states became states. The reason that the states never became states until the 1800s because of all the Hot springs and geysers. There is a Giant Volcano underneath Yellow Stone, it is still active, and They have no way to prepare for a eruption in 2017, yet. Most people think that Yellow Stone was named that because of all yellow you see in the rocks and the hot springs, but really it was named after a river that was called Yellow Stone but it goes back all the way to the native Americans, when they settled on that river.

Safari in South Africa

South Africa Safari

They have lots of birds with beautiful colors.
We saw the Yellow Horned Bill bird, a millipede, Impala, Zebras, Antelope, Elephant, Buffalo, Giraffes, Brown Snake Eagle,
Animals go to open areas when it's windy so their preditors lose their smell.
when approching Zebras you don't want to walk straight towards them you want to walk near them but not to close. They are very used to people walking near them.
antelope like to hide in bush areas so we don't see them.
Hippos are one of the animals that kill other animals.
Mosquitos are one of the insects that kill a lot of animals.
A zebra's eye sight is better at night than at day.
The Zebra's stripes keep bugs from landing on them.
Animals use their tails to communicate with other animals.
Zebra have very strong teeth and kick powerfully.
Elephants are stronger than Buffalo
Animals come together in an open space to help each other when predators come around so they have a better chance on survival.
50,000 muscles in an elephant trunk.
Young boy elephants get chased away when they are too old to stay with the herd.
When the boy becomes big and strong, they are able to come back to the herd again.
Elephants can dig for water unlike most animals.
We found male leopard tracks.
Elephants can't see very well.

A TOUR WITH BIRDS!

Parrots can live for up to 75 or even 80 years!
Parrots repeat what they hear, but they have no idea what they're saying. Parrots reproduce the sounds that they hear. They have a very big beak that can be used for gentle reasons, or for tougher reasons. Parrot feathers stay completely dry when water comes on them. Luckily, they do not clip the bird's wings, because it really affects them in the long-run! We are learning a lot about parrots and the different parts, ways, and functions of them!

Eygpt- 6:00am

Eygpt-6:00am

It's Friday at six in the morning and we are talking to a teacher from Egypt.  Friday was her day off because Fridays and Saturdays are holy.  When we talked to Egypt, it was two in the afternoon, near the end of the winter season.  The beginning of winter is cold, but winter is the best time of year, because it is warm and sunny. School starts at seven thirty in the morning.  There are about seven or eight lessons in a day.  Usually, students eat sandwiches and biscuits for lunch.  They have a break in the middle of their lessons and that is when they eat their lunch and socialize.  At the end of the day, the students go home and study and complete homework.  If time allows, they have free time.  We also learned some Arabic.  In Arabic, hello is Ahlan Bek.  Ma Esmak means "What is your name?"  Some traditional foods include a green soup, made from a smashed green plant.  Cotton is native as well as wheat, rice, and corn, like us.  They also grow bananas, melons, and other fruits.

In Taiwan they have the Dragon Boat Festival where they have boats that they sail across lakes for New Year. On New Year they use firecrackers to keep away evil spirits. In Taiwan they have Teachers Day on 9/28. This is used to celebrate the great teacher Confucius The kids in Taiwan are very attentive, and ask lots of questions. In ways Taiwan and us here at Briarhill have similar holidays, but we have different ones too. In Taiwan they have less holidays than we do though. We all had lots of fun talking to the Taiwanese kids. Thank you for reading the #briarhill24hrworldtour blog.

Antarctica

Antarctica- 1:00am

This was an interesting call because we were able to have a 4 way call with Antarctica.  We brought in our friends from Flower Mound 9 and Lamar schools to join us on this call.  A 4 way call with Antarctica is pretty cool.

Megan is down in Antarctica for her work, shes on the largest settlement out of three through the U.S.A. Its the largest because its closest to New Zealand. She has been there for five months with up to 80 different groups of scientists, where she is basically the "Mom" of all the projects.  It gets so cold down there that if they even exposed a little bit of skin, they would get frostbite. They work with rovers and robots to test rocks and landscape, and sometime they use their data for NASA!

Safety is a big thing they have to watch for so people wont get hurt. Before every trip down to Antarctica, you have to take many test to make sure that you wont have a medical emergency while down there. Last year they found a fish underwater, and it was the first living thing ever discovered that was the closes to the south pole. They have proven that climate change has been an impact, so they have taken fish an other sea life for studies to see what might happen in about 50-100 years, if it's very server.

They where about three shirts everyday plus jackets, and about two layers of pants and long socks. A good amount of people down there have experienced hypothermia, and it's mostly caused by dehydration.

They have a very active community down in Antartica, they will usually have yoga classes and group runs, even dance classes! Overall, Antartica is a very unique place and great to visit there, bye!

New York

We started our next call in New York City.  We visited with Miss Coker who was in Times square! She gave us a Tour of the Square, and told us about how many good pizza places there are. During the tour she showed us where the New Years Eve ball drops and where many Broadway shows are! She told us that must see places were the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, and Broadway. Her favorite thing about New York was how no two people are the same and how there are so many opportunities for everyone. She grew up in Fort Worth and went to college in Oklahoma, then her job took her all the way to New York, and she loves it. she says that New York is colder and  more expensive than here in Texas.  A meal with a burger and fries is about $8.00. Her favorite part of the year is winter because "it's the pretties site to see all year."

Houston, Texas

NASA in Houston, Texas

The first Skype. The beginning of our twenty four hour long journey around the world. Tonight, it's all starting with a Skype to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or NASA, which is located in Houston, Texas. It was 4:00 pm in both locations when we started the Skype and around 4:35 pm when the Skype ended.
We Skyped with a gentleman named Micheal. We learned that the astronauts go to sleep around 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon because they're up from midnight to that time. While awake, they talk with Russia. The Johnson Space Center is only one out of ten NASA space centers in the United States of America. Three are located in California.
They have about 16,000 acres in the Johnson Space Center. They train astronauts in a massive swimming pool. It's about 40 feet deep. They put the astronauts in the deep waters in their suits. They put buoyant weights so they don't sink nor float. There are many people swimming in the water in the case of a malfunction.
The rockets are made of many different materials. They need strong materials, as there is fuel and it has to be sent into space, but it also has to be lightweight so that it can actually be sent into space. It completely depends on the vehicle. They periodically send air into the space station which is 250 miles above the surface.
They changed a lot after the Challenger mission. Their entire culture changed. Instead of focusing on getting people into space, they started focusing on the safety of the astronauts. It's an international effort to send people into space, as many countries around the world have space centers. There have been people living in space since 2000. There are currently six members up in the space station right now.
The process of getting astronauts prepped and into space takes about 12 hours. They make sure everything is alright with the space ship itself, load the fuel, feed the astronauts, get them out there, and double check everything before sending them out. They have successfully send man to the moon six times. It is not needed for you to be an astronaut to work at NASA. They have doctors, physical trainers, accountants, and more.
How long an astronaut gets trained depends on the mission. You firstly get selected to be an astronaut, then go through a year of basic training. For a space shuttle mission, you need to train for two to three years. For a space mission, since they need to know many languages, the training can take up to five years.
What is NASA currently creating? Right now, they are building a rocket to send up to the moon. They are also building a module called the "Orion," which has the potential to hold 12 crew members.
The astronauts can send signals back and forth on the space ship, but they don't exactly have wifi. Before they go up, they need to let the people in the home base know which shows, games, or awards that they want to watch ahead of time.
They take the water out of the food because it isn't good to have the water floating around, it saves weight on the ship so they can send up more food, and it is vacuum sealed so that it can last much longer. When an astronaut gets sick, they have first aid kits up there which they can take care of themselves with as they were trained to do so beforehand. There is a flight surgeon which is always on hand that can speak to the astronauts if there is a more serious injury or illness.

Almost Ready

We are getting excited. The students will be called to the library in 20 minutes. They will eat a quick snack, put their world tour shirts on, and go to their first station. Cannot wait to visit with all of our friends from last year and to make new friends this year.
